   Texas requires an apprentice license from TDLR before you work on electrical jobs — it is an online application and a small fee, with no exam. With it, you can be hired and earning under a licensed master immediately while you look for a registered apprenticeship.

   Apprentice — paid to learn

   Accumulate 8,000 hours of on-the-job training under the supervision of a master electrician, through an IBEW JATC, IEC/ABC program, or open-shop employment. Registered programs add the classroom instruction that makes you exam-ready.

   Journeyman license (TDLR exam)

   With 8,000 documented hours, you qualify for the TDLR journeyman electrician exam (administered by PSI, based on the National Electrical Code). Pass it and the license — the career asset — is yours to renew.

   Go critical: data center electrician

   Journeyman card + NFPA 70E training opens mission-critical work in DFW, Austin–San Antonio, and the West Texas AI campuses. Entry runs $68–82k with median base near $94.5k before overtime — and Texas mega-projects are notorious for heavy, well-paid OT.

   Senior and commissioning roles run $135–165k base; travelers add untaxed per-diem ($140–210/day is common) and overtime for $160–190k typical total comp, with documented outliers at $190–260k on mega-projects. The price is travel and 55-hour weeks — know it going in.
